The MotoGP victory in front of 96,000 spectators at the Sachsenring went to Jorge Martin, who had already won the sprint on Saturday. The Spaniard won the duel at the top with world champion Francesco Bagnaia by 64/1,000 seconds. Third place went to Johann Zarco. The best non-Ducati rider was KTM rider Jack Miller in sixth place, his teammate Brad Binder crashed.

Miller – third in qualifying and sprint – took the lead from the start but wasn’t able to hold that position for long. As the race progressed, Binder proved to be the faster KTM rider. The South African, who had started from the third row, worked his way up to third place before the 27-year-old came to an end after falling into the gravel bed on lap 19. Binder then ran in the direction of the motorhome, visibly battered.

This paved the way for Ducati’s dominating success. Martin and pole man Bagnaia drove away in front and put up a tough fight with the better end for the Spaniard. Martin is thus also the first challenger to the Italian in the World Championship standings. Behind Frenchman Zarco, Marco Bezzecchi and Luca Marini completed the strong result for the Italian manufacturer. The next Grand Prix will take place in Assen, the Netherlands, next weekend.

Honda star Marc Marquez was not at the start. The Spaniard fell again during the warm-up in the morning and suffered a fracture to his left thumb and an ankle injury. The six-time MotoGP World Champion had produced a total of five falls this weekend.

KTM meanwhile announced that veteran development rider Dani Pedrosa will return to the San Marino GP at Misano in September thanks to a wild card. The 37-year-old Spaniard impressed with a strong seventh place in Jerez at the end of April.
