At the Ironman in Klagenfurt, Georg Enzenberger took third place behind Mathias Petersen from Denmark and Cameron Wurf from Australia and became the Austrian long-distance triathlon champion.
After 3.86 kilometers of swimming and 180 kilometers of cycling, the surprise man from Eferding pushed himself onto the podium with a strong performance over the final marathon. “It’s so fantastic. I wouldn’t have made it through without so many people cheering me on,” said the 29-year-old, who with a total time of 8:08:28 hours was almost twelve minutes behind winner Petersen. Michael Weiss, who was one of the favorites after second place last year, had to give up with cramps while cycling.
The fastest woman was Lotte Wilms from the Netherlands (8:56:51), who prevailed over Carinthian local hero Gabriele Obmann (9:02:55). Third was the German Laura Zimmermann.
