Transfer: Nkunku change from RB Leipzig to Chelsea fixed

With Nkunku, an exceptional player is leaving the Bundesliga for the Premier League. RB Leipzig and sports director Max Eberl have to compensate for this loss.

The long-negotiated move from Bundesliga top scorer Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig to Chelsea has now been officially confirmed by both clubs. “Nkunku is a Blue!” tweeted the 2021 Champions League winner.

Accordingly, the German cup winners and the twelfth-placed Premier League team agreed on a transfer fee, since the 25-year-old Frenchman in Leipzig originally had a contract until June 30, 2026. According to reports, it should be around 60 million euros. When his contract was extended last year, the lively ball magician had an opt-out clause guaranteed.

“Now it’s time for me to say ‘Au Revoir’ Leipzig. I am incredibly grateful to RB Leipzig and everyone at the club – my team, the coaching staff, the staff and staff and most importantly the fans. I had four years in Leipzig, which I will never forget,” Nkunku said in an RB statement, while being quoted by Chelsea as saying: “Having played in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, I now want to play in the Premier League, one of the strongest leagues in the world.”

RB now has to find a successor for Nkunku, who was sent to Saxony by his youth club Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 for a fee of 13 million euros. “Now we will find good solutions to close the gap left by Christo,” said RB sports director Max Eberl. At RB, Nkunku was formed into an international and was voted Footballer of the Year in Germany last season. In the election, he prevailed against Robert Lewandowski, winner of the previous year.

Last season, Nkunku scored the top scorer with his two goals in the last Bundesliga game against FC Schalke 04 (4:2) together with Bremen’s Niclas Füllkrug (both 16 Bundesliga goals). Overall, he made 172 appearances for RB and scored 70 goals. With 56 assists, he was involved in a total of 126 goals.
