Dominic Thiem doesn’t really want to get going on grass either. The 29-year-old from Lichtenwörther suffered his 14th defeat in the 21st match of the season on the tour at the start of the ATP 500 lawn tennis tournament in Halle. The world number 89. was defeated by the powerful German Alexander Zverev (No. 22), who suffered from thigh problems after entering the French Open semifinals, after a break 3: 6, 4: 6.
“I would like to have more points because it makes life on the circuit easier. But giving up is not my thing. I want to go back to the front. I have to keep at it, think positively,” said Thiem.
Always trouble with Giorgi
See you with the ladies Camila Giorgi, who won the Upper Austria Ladies in Linz in 2018, was (once again) exposed to a shit storm on social networks. After Venus Williams fell violently in the first round duel in Birmingham, the Italian let out an inappropriate “Yes!”, which is considered highly unsportsmanlike behavior in the scene.
Giorgi, number 48 in the world, was promptly presented with the bill. Despite knee problems, Williams retained the upper hand after 3:16 hours with 7: 6 (5), 4: 6, 7: 6 (6) and thus celebrated her first success over a top 50 player in 44 months.
But that’s not all: The seven-time Grand Slam triumphant from the United States is only the sixth player to have celebrated a victory on the WTA Tour installed in 1973 after her 43rd birthday (last Saturday).
Previously, such a feat was only Dodo Cheney (1973), Renée Richards (1977 to 81), Judy Dalton (1981), Martina Navratilova (2002 to 04) and Kimiko Date Krumm (2013 to 15) succeeded. “Giorgi pushed me to be better than I thought,” Williams commented on her magic moment – only 697th in the ranking.
Giorgi, who is accompanied on the tour by her impulsive father Sergio, who often falls out of character, has caused a stir in the recent past because she is said to have been on the road with a fake (corona) vaccination certificate.
End of career at 27
While Williams isn’t thinking about quitting yet, he has to Anne Kontaveit – a year ago still number two in the world – after the “Farewell” in Wimbledon (from July 3rd) draw a line. With 27
A lumbar disc degeneration in the back does not allow a continuation of the career. “It’s impossible for me to continue playing at the highest level in such a highly competitive field,” lamented the Estonian, who had captured six WTA singles titles.
