After her surprising opening victory at the lawn tournament in Berlin, tennis player Jule Niemeier was stopped abruptly in the round of 16. A fall forces her to give up.
Tennis player Jule Niemeier gave up at the grass tournament in Berlin in the round of 16 due to an injury. The 23-year-old fell in the second set against the Czech Marketa Vondrousova when the score was 5: 5 and fell on the wrist of her right batting arm.
After a break in treatment, the Wimbledon quarter-finalist tried again – but after her first serve, she ended the match prematurely with a score of 3: 6, 5: 6. This also eliminated the third and last remaining German individual player in the main draw of the WTA 500 tournament in Grunewald.
Niemeier, who had surprisingly defeated last year’s winner Ons Jabeur from Tunisia in two sets at the start, improved in the second set in the Steffi Graf Stadium. But she couldn’t take the serve from her opponent despite good chances. After Niemeier was injured, with tears in her eyes, she cooled the painful area with a thick ice cube bag and was treated by a physiotherapist. But all this was unsuccessful.
This means that the Dortmund native will not play doubles alongside Noma Noha Akugue against top seeded Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the USA and Ellen Perez from Australia. The second round match was scheduled for late afternoon.
Over for Gauff
Cori Gauff, seeded number five, had already said goodbye in the round of 16. The 19-year-old American surprisingly lost her duel with the Russian Yekaterina Alexandrowa 4: 6, 0: 6.
The $850,000 tournament at the LTTC Rot-Weiss is considered preparation for the Grand Slam event in Wimbledon (July 3rd to 16th). Eight out of ten top 10 players are in Berlin, the final will take place next Sunday in the Steffi-Graf-Stadion.
