The first fistball double in the club’s history literally slipped through the fingers of FBC Urfahr. This extends a dry spell of 67 years, the last time record champion ATSV Linz-Waldegg conquered both field Bundesliga titles in one season was in 1956. “It’s a shame, we’ve never been that close,” said Urfahr legend Martin Weiß.
The former Austrian team boss and super attacker had commented on the final 3 on the well-attended center court in the M-TEC Arena Arnreit as an expert for ORF-Sport+ alongside the former fistball player Boris Kastner-Jirka.
After Urfahr’s men had crowned themselves champions with a confident 4-1 win over Union Compact Freistadt and for the first time since 2019, the women developed a thriller that couldn’t be surpassed in terms of excitement.
The Linz women turned up against the Union Haidlmair Schwingenschuh Nußbach after two completely sleepy sentences (quote from captain Anna Wohlfahrt: “We were completely lost there”) and several times had a hand on the trophy. For example, when the score was 9:7 in the sixth round or 10:9 (match point) in the decision set, which ultimately went to the series champion from the Traunviertel with 14:12.
“A stone falls from our hearts”
For Nußbach’s women, the 4:3 win was the fifth field title in a row. Thus, after the direct duel for supremacy, the master’s plate finally becomes their property. Urfahr had triumphed “only” four times in the past ten years and was a hair’s breadth behind.
“It’s a dream that we now have the plate with us. The relief is huge, it’s a load lifted from our hearts,” rejoiced Nußbach’s top attacker Marlene Hieslmair, who was voted the best player in the final. Although there were warm hugs from the winners and losers after the game, Urfahr’s disappointment ran deep. “We fought until we dropped, unfortunately it wasn’t enough,” said coach Kathrin Koller.
Her male counterpart, Romeo Dominioni, on the other hand, had tears of joy in his eyes. “I’m super proud. The guys worked so well and so hard, it was almost perfect.” Urfahr captain Stefan Wohlfahrt paid tribute to his coach: “We had the right tactics for Freistadt.”

The defeated Mühlviertler didn’t skimp on self-criticism: “We made too many trivial mistakes, we weren’t consistent enough. But our team is young, we won silver, we didn’t lose gold,” said Freistadt captain Jean Andrioli.
Bronze went to Freistadt’s ladies and the dethroned defending champion Vöcklabruck.
