Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez almost collide. In Austria, however, they are unbeatable on the track in the sprint – and they want to celebrate again in the Formula 1 main race in Spielberg.
A near-collision between Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen and his teammate Sergio Perez prompts Red Bull to talk.
“We have to calm down first, but of course you have to address it,” said Red Bulls motorsport consultant Helmut Marko in Spielberg. In the sprint race as part of the Austrian Grand Prix, the stable rivals almost collided on the first lap. Perez pushed Verstappen off the piste because he said he hadn’t seen him in time.
“Sending the others out on the meadow, especially in wet conditions, is not quite in the spirit of good teamwork,” criticized Marko on the Sky TV channel. Verstappen and Perez clarified the incident in a conversation that was still clearly visible to the television cameras, but they should have to explain the situation again at the racing team. “Everything is fine for me now,” said two-time champion Verstappen.
Despite the turbulent scene, Verstappen and Perez finished first and second – in today’s main race (3 p.m. / Sky) the duo would like to repeat this result. At the team’s home game in Styria, the 25-year-old Dutchman is once again the big favorite and will start the Grand Prix from first place on the grid. He is 70 points ahead of the 33-year-old Perez in the overall World Championship standings and has already achieved his seventh win of the season.
