Argentina Open: Lourdes Carlé, a promise of Argentine tennis that is already a reality

Argentina Open: Lourdes Carlé, a promise of Argentine tennis that is already a reality

Born on February 10, 2000, Carlé stood out very quickly for her qualities. It was then that he left his home to move to Tandil. Someone very special had detected her: Marcelo Gomez, the trainer of Juan Martin del Potro, began to train her.

His last name became one of the most sought after at the WTA Argentina Open. Although she lost 3-6, 6-2 and 6-2 in her debut against the Greek Despina Papamichail – together they are in the double final -, her time at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club was not unnoticed. “I’m on level, but defeats hurt a lot, and more at home”, confesses to Ambit.

This year he won the W25 in Santo Domingo, his eighth ITF World Tour title. In addition, he reached at least the quarterfinals in a dozen tournaments. In April he played the Billie Jean King Cup against Kazakhstan, and beat Elena Rybakina and Yulia Putintseva, then two Top 30. Now it was time for her to debut in the main draw of a WTA.

These figures, cold by themselves, explain why it went from 443 in January to 261 in this season finale. His place in the Australian Open rankings is getting closer and closer.

“The balance for the year is positive. The advancement in the ranking is a sample of the work and the progress. But when you reach this level, you realize that more things are missing and that you have to keep improving “, elaborates.

Two years ago he experienced a special event. Tired of fighting in a sport that offers few opportunities and demands exorbitant sacrifices, Carlé emigrated to the United States to study Sports Management at the University of Georgia. A few months later, she became champion along with the student team. Thus, he secured a lifetime scholarship to restart the career of his choice.

It was not easy for Carlé to enter the elite of women’s tennis, but she did so on the basis of her own game that led her to do well on the ITF circuit. There he drinks his classification to Argentina Open, the first WTA tournament in the country in 34 years.

“Having a tournament like this is very good because we don’t always have the chance to play this type of tournament nearby”, says the Buenos Aires. He argues that this championship is “key” not only for the Albicelestes but “for all the South American girls.” In addition to the (few) places at the ITF level, it is one of the three WTA events in the region: along with Buenos Aires (125) it is held in Bogotá (250) and Montevideo (125). In Latin America they total five dates, with two competitions in Mexico, also category 250.

For the Buenosairean, that the tennis of the major circuit returns to Argentina hides something else: “The possibility also for girls who do not have a good ranking to measure themselves against others who do. That drives the level up. It is very positive “.

Although the evolution of Carlé is notorious, she chooses not to be satisfied with what has been done. “I need to improve to keep winning”, doubles. “I have to believe more in myself, in my patterns, in my serve, in my forehand. There are small details in which one closes himself that he realizes after the match passes “, argues with maturity and self-criticism.

The good results in the US were not only at the university level. In 2015 she was champion in the Orange Bowl Sub 16 (Sebastián Báez won it among the men), and in 2017 she reached the junior semifinals of the US Open, when he fell with Coco Gauff.

The figure of “Negro” Gómez is not the only one that connects Carlé with Del Potro, with whom he practiced in Miami in the middle of the year. Since 2019, after her university career, she has been trained by Franco Davín, who led Gaston Gaudio to win Roland Garros in 2004 and to Tandilense in the historic US Open 2009. “Without him, this would have been very difficult, for all the work he did with me”, acknowledges with gratitude towards his team, which also includes the coach and statistician Marcelo Albamonte.

“The place where I am today is largely because of Franco. He is a key person. He always emphasizes that I trust myself and that I worry about myself and not the rivals, in playing my game “, reveals about the work dynamics between the two.

Carlé accepts that he usually looks at his opponents a lot to develop his game strategy. However, Davín thinks differently: “He tells me that this is great, but to focus first on what I have to do and then on the rival. He always transmits a lot of tranquility to me, and that for me, who am a more anxious person, did me very well “.

The aspirations of the Buenos Aires lead her to think of a very promising short term. Your goal is in the Australian Open, since very few points separate her from entering the classification of the first Grand Slam of 2022. It is tempting to think of her as one of the promises of Argentine tennis. But now I do not know. And the best is yet to come.
