Transfermarkt : Official change: FC Liverpool brings Leipzig’s Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai was one of the best at RB last season. After that he kept talking about a change. He is now going to Liverpool – and will be the record transfer of the Saxons.

Dominik Szoboszlai is leaving DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig and moving to Liverpool. Both clubs officially announced the transfer on Sunday after the Hungarian passed the medical check in England on Saturday.

Just before the deadline for an exit clause on Friday evening, Liverpool pulled the option and transferred the fixed transfer fee of around 70 million euros to RB. This makes the 22-year-old Hungarian national player, who still had a contract with the Saxon Bundesliga club until June 30, 2026, the most expensive transfer in the history of the German cup winners.

“Of course we would have liked to have gone into the new season and the years to come with Dominik. However, he has now decided to go to England to join Liverpool FC – and thus to an absolutely top international team. That’s again an award for us as a club and for the work done here to take young players to the next level,” said RB sporting director Max Eberl.

So far, Keita and Nkunku have been the most expensive exits

Szoboszlai, who came to Leipzig from RB Salzburg for 22 million euros in the summer of 2021 and flourished under coach Marco Rose, had repeatedly avoided a clear commitment to Leipzig in the past few weeks and repeatedly forced a change. Before winning the cup, Rose said: “You can’t do anything with an exit clause, but I’m deeply relaxed.” In total, Szoboszlai played 91 times in RB jersey and scored 20 goals. He won the cup twice with the Leipzig team.

So far, Naby Keita, who moved to Liverpool in 2018, and Christopher Nkunku, who went to Chelsea after the past season, were considered the most expensive departures from Leipzig with a transfer fee of around 60 million euros. The sum for Szoboszlai, of which a considerable part is to go to his former clubs as training remuneration, may soon be exceeded, as the Croatian Josko Gvardiol can also leave the club prematurely thanks to an exit clause. Champions League winners Manchester City are very interested in the centre-back and are said to have already made an offer of 90 million euros. RB probably insists on the value of the exit clause of 110 million euros, which will only take effect from 2024. The Croatian would then be the most expensive defender in the world.
