Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won his fifth Formula 1 Grand Prix in a row in Spielberg on Sunday and, after a total of seven wins in nine races in the world championship, pulled away with an 81-point lead. Second-placed Charles Leclerc was 5.2 seconds behind in his Ferrari, but only came that close because Verstappen had soft tires put on again before the last lap to take the checkered flag for the extra point for the fastest lap. The show of force on the Red Bull Ring was echoed in the press, as was the chaos with the numerous time penalties due to violations of the “track limits”. The most important press comments after the Austrian Grand Prix:
“Daily Mail”: “Max Verstappen gave the crowd at the Red Bull Ring the emphatic Grand Prix victory they wanted – and the world awaited – to hold on to his iron grip on World Championship fortunes.”
“The Guardians”: “Max Verstappen continues his one-man victory parade with his win at the Austrian Grand Prix.”
“Southgerman newspaper”: “Chaos behind the never-satisfied caterpillar. Max Verstappen also wins in Spielberg. But because Lewis Hamilton and others often get off the track, they first moan and snitch like in kindergarten – then the Grand Prix ends in a jumble of rules.”
“Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”: “Simply insatiable. Max Verstappen wins his fifth Formula 1 race in a row in Spielberg. The world champion doesn’t even miss an extra point.”
“The world”: “Amidst the clouds of smoke from his Oranje fans, Max Verstappen, who had been invincible for months, rolled onto the next lap of honor at the Red Bull home game. With his 42nd career victory, the Formula 1 world champion surpassed motorsport legend Ayrton Senna in Austria and is racing at breakneck speed toward the title hat-trick.”
“Mundo Deportivo”: “Verstappen surpasses Senna in Austria and wins by an offensive superiority.”
“Ace”: “Comfortable win for Max Verstappen in Red Bull’s home race.”
“Corriere dello Sport”: “Ferrari chaos in Austria. Sainz punished and upset the rankings.”
“Tutosport”: “The Verstappen show, he wins and dominates in Austria.”
“L’Equipe”: “In a Grand Prix marked by penalties, Max Verstappen succeeded in demonstrating again on the Red Bull Ring.”
“View”: “The Austrian GP (with the logical winner Max Verstappen on Red Bull-Honda) was a car race for the circus.”
“Daily Gazette”: “Verstappen wins – but there is an insane flood of penalties to talk about”
