Now it is official! Club legend Xavi returns to FC Barcelona and succeeds Ronald Koeman as head coach.
Club icon Xavi is supposed to bring the FC Barcelona restructuring case back to its old strength, at least in terms of sport. The hard-hit traditional Catalan club announced the expected return of the 41-year-old on Saturday. Xavi, who succeeds the sacked Ronald Koeman, receives a contract until 2024.
“Welcome home,” the club wrote on its website on Saturday. The return home was delayed because Barca had to buy the former midfield maestro out of his contract with Al-Sadd SC in Qatar, which runs until 2023, and the club finally gave the clearance on Friday. Xavi is considered the solution of choice by the fans, although he has little experience as a coach: He started his new career at Al-Sadd in 2019.
Xavi back in Barcelona: only Messi wore the Barca shirt more often
The 2010 world champion and two-time European champion (2008/2012) ended his professional career there two years ago. His heart club, however, is Barca: only Lionel Messi wore the Catalans jersey more often than him (767 times). At his side, Xavi won the Champions League four times and helped shape the most successful era in the club’s history.
Koeman was sacked after only 15 months after the 0-1 at promoted Rayo Vallecano. In LaLiga, Barca fell to ninth place, and in the Champions League, Bayern Munich’s opponents are threatened with being out in the preliminary round for the first time in 21 years.
