Felix Gall also proved his form at the Tour de France.
On the fifth leg of the Tour of France, the first difficult mountain stage over 165 kilometers from Pau to Laruns, the Tyrolean finished third. The day’s win went to Australia’s Jai Hindley, who took over the yellow jersey from Adam Yates.
However, the 25-year-old Gall collected the most points on the climbs in the first and third category and thus took the lead in the special classification.
Fighting for the stage win for a long time
On the last climb, Hindley, who had won the Giro d’Italia last year, was able to break away from his escape companion Gall. In the descent that followed, Gall was caught up by a small group of pursuers.
Of the tour favourites, last year’s winner Jonas Vingegaard convinced in fifth place. His toughest competitor, Tadej Pogacar, crossed the finish line more than a minute behind the Dane.
On Thursday, the 144.9 kilometers from Tarbes to Cauterets will be followed by the next difficult mountain stage with an altitude difference of 3922 metres.
