To measure himself against the best, discus thrower Lukas Weißhaidinger once again made the journey north. With his 65.26 meters and third place at the athletics meeting in Karlstad (Swe) behind Olympic champion Daniel Stahl (Swe/70.25) and Matthew Denny (Aus/66.01), the Innviertler was satisfied.
“Our arrival the day before took almost ten hours, including five hours in a shuttle bus,” says the 31-year-old, who, due to his dimensions – 150 kilos and 1.97 meters – does not fit into every airplane seat. Karlstad was his sixth consecutive podium of the season. He had been on the road a lot recently. Weißhaidinger had contested the meeting in Sweden during training: “Preparing for the World Cup in Budapest naturally has priority.”
From the training, the Olympic bronze medalist also took the state championships on Saturday in Bregenz with him. Regardless of the ten mentions, his sixth title is a matter of form. The current best performance of the season by Will Dibo, second-ranked starter on the entry list, is 54.98 meters, that of the defending champion is 70.68 meters.
Susanne Gogl-Walli can also concentrate entirely on building up form for the World Cup. The 400-meter sprinter bought the direct ticket by breaking the 51-second mark and therefore does not have to chase world ranking points this year. In Bregenz, the 27-year-old from Linz will run the 200 meters alongside her parade route.
Three starts by Verena Mayr
All-around athlete Verena Mayr will continue her comeback at the state championships. Born in Ebensee, she has named for the long jump, shot put and the 100 meter hurdles. In the first two disciplines there will be a comparison with Sarah Lagger, who is also one of the medal contenders in the high jump.
Endiorass Kingley from the Ländle could also return home several times. The TGW Decathlon Union athlete is Jordan Lindinger-Asamoah’s first challenger in the triple jump. In addition, the 21-year-old can count on chances over 110 meter hurdles as well as in the high and long jump.
