Jasper Philipsen remains the measure of all things as this year’s Tour de France culminates in a bunch sprint. On the eleventh stage over 180 kilometers from Clermont-Ferrand to Moulins, the Belgian celebrated his fourth victory of the day on Wednesday.
With an irresistible final sprint, he effortlessly overtook Dylan Groenewegen, whom he ultimately distanced by a good bike length. A demonstration of power by Michael Gogl’s teammate, whose former inglorious nickname “Jasper Disaster” has long since changed to “Jasper the Master”.
The former came about when the professional was unable to keep the promise in the form of his talent in his early years. At least since this Tour de France there can be no more talk of it. “It’s an incredible tour for me. I still can’t believe how great everything has gone so far,” said Philipsen.
The driver from the Alpecin racing team extended his lead in the sprint classification to 145 points. In the overall classification – Jonas Vingegaard leads 17 seconds ahead of Tadej Pogacar – as well as in the mountains classification – Neilson Powless is 18 points ahead of East Tyrolean Felix Gall – everything stayed the same.
Good news for Gall: After the hilly section on Thursday from Roanne to Belleville-en-Beaujolais, it’s off to the Alps, where three mountain stages follow from Friday to Sunday.
