Summer, 33 degrees and not an hour’s drive from the holiday destination of Miami in the US state of Florida. Jürgen Penker could probably have had it worse with his second job. However: The focus of his second overseas assignment in the Florida Panthers’ goalie department is entirely on the development camp, which has been running since Monday and will last until Friday. So you can’t consider it a vacation, especially since the probability of thunderstorms is still very high until the end of the camp on Friday and beyond.
Together with the goalkeeper coaches of the AHL team (Leo Luongo) and the NHL team (Robb Tallas), Penker is taking care of six goalkeepers in the so-called development camp this year. Starting with Spencer Knight from the NHL team, who played 21 games in the NHL this year. For completeness, Ludovic Waeber, Olof Glifford (Florida’s fifth-round pick in this year’s draft), Charlie Robertson, Tyler Muszelik and Cooper Black are the other goalies to be sighted and developed.
Reinforcement from Carinthia
Incidentally, Austrian support mixed in with the field players: Luis Lindner, a 22-year-old Carinthian from Spital an der Drau, who went through the Red Bull Hockey Academy and will defend for the University of New Hampshire in the NCAA College League next year , is also among the players. Penker and Lindner know each other from the U20 national team.

The development camp serves the NHL teams as a sighting opportunity for young talents and a stress test for players who are already on their way to the first team. The Austrian top drafts Marco Rossi in Minnesota, Marco Kasper in Detroit and David Reinbacher in Montreal are currently going through such a camp. Regulars of the NHL team – which in the case of the Florida Panthers advanced to the Stanley Cup final in the past season – only get into the pre-season at a later point in time. After his overseas assignment, Jürgen Penker is expected back in Linz by the end of July at the latest, where he will start the pre-season with the goalkeepers of the Steinbach Black Wings.
