The long-time FC Barcelona professional and 2010 World Champion has received a contract with the Major League Soccer club until 2025. The Spaniard, who has been 35 since Sunday, played at FC Barcelona from 2008 to 2021 together with the superstar from Argentina.
The former Barca captain has won the league nine times, the Spanish Cup seven times and the Champions League three times with the Catalans.
Messi and Busquets’ first appearance in the new kit is set to come on July 21 when Miami opens the Leagues Cup against Mexican club Cruz Azul.
Beckham’s vision
Messi was unveiled in front of a sold-out crowd of 18,000 at DRV PNK Stadium on Sunday night. “I am very happy that I chose this city and this project with my family”said Messi at the event named “The Unveil” (the revealing). “Great things are about to happen. I feel the same desire I’ve always felt as a competitor, to win and help Miami grow”explained the 36-year-old.
Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham had made a similar move a few years ago, joining the Los Angeles Galaxy. “Ten years ago I started the journey of building a new MLS team”said the former England international. “I said then that it was a dream to bring the best players in the world to South Florida and the great city of Miami. Players who share our goal of making football grow in this country.”
In a video message, sports greats such as football legend Tom Brady and basketball player Stephen Curry welcomed Messi to the United States.
