PAOK Saloniki is the name of the opponent of HC Linz AG in the Handball European Cup. Austria’s runner-up has a bye in the first round and will not meet the Greeks until October.
The home game takes place on the 14th or 15th, the second leg a week later. “PAOK is one of the top players in Greece,” said Linz manager Uwe Schneider about last season’s third-placed team. “It’s a really good name, economically it’s not overkill,” Schneider alludes to the fact that the travel costs due to the necessary flight will be higher this time than last year, when the bus went to Ljubuski in Bosnia.
The sporting importance of the Greek league is demonstrated by the fact that the long-standing ÖHB national team goalkeeper Thomas Bauer won the European Cup in 2021 with AEK Athens.
Packed preparation
The HC Linz team received the news of the European Cup opponents during the summer break. Test matches against Lovosice (8 August), Dukla Prague (9 August), Krems (11 August) and St. Pölten (16 August) are planned for August, before that on August 18 and 19 traditional Berger tournament follows.
Coach Milan Vunjak has to form a new team, because HC Linz had to record six serious departures, including the retirement of the Hermann twins. According to Schneider, the squad planning is on target: “If we do anything else transfer technically, then only small things.”
