Before the first arrow can hit the dartboard at home, the board should be hung up safely and in accordance with the rules. You can find out here how this can be done quickly and precisely and which smart gadgets are helpful.
A few years ago darts was decried as a dusty pub sport in this country. The motto: Throw a few arrows at a target with beer and the buddies in the smoky pub around the corner to drive away the boredom. In the best case, a hobby that spilled over to Germany from the pubs on the island. Meanwhile, a real cult around the darts has developed. The arrows not only fly in hundreds of bars specially designed for darts (but not currently due to the lockdown), but mainly at home. In the hobby room, in the attic or in the living room, the coveted triple 20 field is targeted or simply gambled for the fun of it. In addition, the World Cup will run live on free TV for two weeks. The heroes are called Michael Van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright or Gabriel Clemens. In short: Darts has given its image a huge boost.
And best of all: If you want to get started now, you don’t need more than a dartboard, a set of arrows, a tape measure and some manual skill. In this article you will find out how to hang up a dartboard, what to watch out for and how to protect the wall from impacts from steel darts.
Hanging up the dartboard: questions and answers
- How high does the dartboard have to hang?
- How do you securely attach the dartboard to the wall?
- How do I protect the wall behind the dartboard?
- What role does the bully eye play when hanging up a dartboard?
- How much space do you need to the right and left of the dartboard?
How high does the dartboard have to hang?
The height at which a dartboard has to be mounted is specified in the official darts rules. For playing with so-called steel darts there should be exactly 1.73 meters between the center of the disc and the ground. With the somewhat rarer soft or e-darts variant, the dartboard hangs one centimeter lower, at a height of 1.72 meters, according to the rules. The relevant center of the disc is marked by the famous Bulls Eye, whose diameter is exactly 12.7 millimeters. A makes measuring easier.
How do you attach a dartboard correctly?
As a rule, the small tools that make hanging up the dartboard are included in the scope of delivery. Otherwise the so-called board brackets or available seperately. These brackets are designed in such a way that the bull’s eye of the pane hangs on the wall at the exact height indicated. And this is how you do it:
- Set the measuring tape to a length of 1.73 meters and mark the point on the wall with a thin pencil.
- Hold the dartboard holder at the appropriate point and mark the drill holes with a pencil as well.
- Drill the holes and screw the part to the wall where the dartboard will be hung.
- Place your dartboard face down on the floor.
- Now screw the round plastic disc exactly onto the Bulls Eye (usually the center of the disc is also marked on the back).
- Turn the pane over again and carefully hang it in the holder on the wall
- Align the dartboard so that the segment with the 20 is exactly at 12 o’clock
Note: According to the official regulations, there should be about 1.20 meters of free space to the left and right of the dartboard. Since this is not always possible, make sure that the board hangs at least 50 centimeters away from furniture or corners of the room. This makes playing noticeably easier.
Some dartboards or the accessory sets also come with adjustable spacers, with which the dartboard is even more stable and secure on the wall and which prevent the board from wobbling and rattling on the wall every time an arrow hits the wall. Spacers are especially useful if the wall is not completely flat.
Electronic dartboards are usually also supplied with a mounting kit. In this case, mark the drill holes with a template (should be included in the scope of delivery) and hang the board on the appropriate screws later. Make sure the pane is hanging straight. If in doubt, a spirit level helps with fine adjustment. You can find out which electronic dartboards are available and what differentiates the individual models from one another in detail .
Hanging up the dartboard: an important tip for beginners
Whether in the hobby room or the living room – the darts have no place in the wall. That makes ugly holes that are difficult to putty. Because the arrows quickly land next to the board and get stuck in the wall, especially with the first attempts at throwing, beginners should hit the wall with a so-called protection. These are rings filled with a kind of foam, usually around 20 centimeters wide, which prevent stray darts from landing in the wall. They are available in different colors and designs.
Before the first arrows fly towards the board, the measuring tape has to run again. Because from a meter it is no art to hit the target. According to the rules and regulations, the throwing line, also known as the oche, is exactly 2.37 meters away from the darts board in steel darts. The decisive factor is not the wall, but the front of the board. So first check how thick the dartboard is. Then measure the 2.37 meters from the wall and add the thickness of the board. The discharge line is marked very pragmatically with a plastic adhesive tape.
If you have a lot of space and do not want to damage the laminate or parquet, you can also use a ponder. This saves measuring, because the mats are usually exactly measured or marked at the appropriate places. If you don’t have space for a dart carpet, you can also project the throw line onto the floor using a laser. The Laser Oche is attached to the wall and marks the set distance. Here it is available.
