The national coach and the German soccer players have completely different conditions in the Australian winter than at the European Championships in England.
National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg expects a tough preliminary round at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The goal of the German vice European champions is still the title.
“But there is no guarantee. That was evident at the start of the tournament: two games in which nuances decided. It will be the same for us, even in the group phase,” said the 55-year-old in an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
Passion, Intensity, Willingness
You can show a top performance and still lose, Voss-Tecklenburg warned and emphasized: “Was a game bad then? No! When I see our players, their personality, their motivation, then we will at least give everything we have. With passion, intensity, willingness. That doesn’t mean that we play perfect football. We won’t always succeed.”
The DFB selection will play their first World Cup game this Monday (10:30 a.m. CEST/ZDF) in Melbourne against Morocco. Other opponents in Group H are Colombia on July 30 and South Korea on August 3.
Like her players, Voss-Tecklenburg no longer wants to talk about the EM 2022 in England when her team only lost in the final against the host selection. “We have to anticipate new conditions and moods in Australia and act accordingly. We don’t have the same team here either, so that changes something,” she explained. “Copy-and-paste doesn’t work. It’s pitch black and cold here at half past five. Of course that’s a different sense of togetherness.” The DFB women won the World Cup in 2003 and 2007.
