Swimming: The German hopes at the swimming world championships

Especially on the middle and long distances, the German pool swimmers calculate something at the World Cup. A swimming pair has a chance of winning a medal right from the start.

The open water swimmers have submitted, the German pool swimmers want to follow up: After four gold and one bronze for the team of the German Swimming Association in the Fukuoka Sea, the pool competitions at the World Championships in southwestern Japan begin this Sunday (3.30 a.m. CEST).

Several German swimmers also have chances of medals in the Marine Messe.

Florian Wellbrock

The 25-year-old is already the double world champion from Fukuoka. Wellbrock won the open water over ten and five kilometers. He gave up the final relay voluntarily in order to be able to better prepare for the indoor races. Wellbrock competes in the 1500 meter freestyle as third in the past World Cup. He is the top favorite on his favorite track in the pool. In 14:34.89 minutes, the native of Bremen holds the world best time of the year. He is also one of the hot contenders for precious metal over 800 meters.

Lukas Martens

Wellbrock also gets competition from its own ranks. Märtens, who, like Wellbrock, trains in Magdeburg with long-distance national coach Bernd Berkhahn, has chosen a truly mammoth program for the World Cup. The 21-year-old wants to swim 200, 400, 800 and 1500 meters individually and 4 x 200 meters in the freestyle relay. So far this year, only Bobby Finke from the USA and Australia’s Samuel Short have been faster than Märtens in the 800 meters. His chances of a medal are even better over half the distance on the first day of the competition. Märtens is Vice World Champion and European Champion. He is also in second place in the world annual list. However, he has not prepared himself specifically for one route. “I’m well positioned for all routes,” he said.

Isabel Gose

Märten’s girlfriend Gose is aiming for her first World Cup medal in Fukuoka. “A World Cup medal is a dream. You would be lying if you said otherwise,” she told the German Press Agency. “I’ll try to do my best and then see how far it takes me.” Gose had secured the 400 meter freestyle title at the European Championships in Rome last year. Silver in the 800m and bronze in the 200m. If things go well for you and Märtens, you could both win precious metal within half an hour on Sunday. First up is the men’s 400m final (1:02 p.m. CEST), followed by the women’s final (1:32 p.m. CEST).

Anna misery

Like Gose and Märtens, the 21-year-old breaststroke swimmer is one of the young Germans who have the potential for a great international career. Elendt traveled to Japan as Vice World Champion in the 100-meter distance. However, their form is difficult to assess. At the German championships two weeks ago, she suffered a thigh strain. It is unclear whether it may still affect them.
