If not him, who? Goalscorer Ronivaldo also proved his nose for goals in the first competitive game of the new season: The Brazilian paved the way for promotion to the second round of the ÖFB Cup in a 5-1 win for FC Blau-Weiss Linz with his goal to make it 2-1 against the Upper Austrian regional league team Wallern.
In the first hour, the 1,000 spectators on the Trattnachtaler grounds were treated to a real cup fight: Coach Gerald Scheiblehner’s team had a really difficult time in their first competitive game as a Bundesliga club, especially in the first half. The Upper Austria League promoted team had the first chance: Alexander Dallhammer tested BW keeper Nicolas Schmid with a half-volley after just six minutes. The guests remained harmless offensively for a long time, Raphael Hofer recorded the first overtures with a free kick (16th) and a blocked shot (26th).
With the first really nice action, the blue and white took the lead: Ronivaldo had let his opponent get out with a turn and served Julian Gölles (32nd) ideally, who remained ice cold in one on one – 1:0.
Happy second half
After a first half with few chances, the second half presented itself as a mirror image: Just a few seconds after the restart, Blue and White had missed top chances to make it 2-0 through Gölles, Hofer and Ronivaldo. That took revenge: In the 50th minute, Wallern’s Philipp Mitter headed in after a corner – and made the local duel really exciting again.
It was a renewed wake-up call for the Oberhaus club: Wallern goalkeeper Daniel Zach was able to save from a flick by Tobias Koch (51′), shortly afterwards he was powerless: The strong Gölles had served Hofer, whose shot from seven meters fell right at Ronivaldo’s feet: the top Linzer striker didn’t miss this opportunity and brought the Royal Blues back into the lead (59′) – 2: 1.
In the finish, Linz made things clear: Paul Mensah had let Wallern’s defense stand with a speed dribble and pushed in to make it 3-1 (71′). The 4:1 by substitute Marco Krainz was a real dream goal: The midfielder hit the sixteen right into the long cross corner. Mehmet Ibrahimi, who also came on as a substitute, scored the final point in the 87th minute.
