The German had won nine races in a row in 2013 – also as a Red Bull driver. The record for the longest winning streak by a team now belongs to Red Bull. McLaren came second on Sunday, while Lando Norris finished second, as he did at Silverstone. Third was Sergio Perez.
Verstappen’s Red Bull teammate drove up from ninth on the grid at the Hungaroring in Mogyorod near Budapest. Pole sitter Lewis Hamilton not only lost the lead to Verstappen at the start, but also had to watch both McLarens drive past him. The seven-time world champion from Great Britain finished fourth in his Mercedes. Fifth was Australian Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren.
After his overtaking maneuver, it was a quiet exit for Verstappen, which ended as scheduled with the 44th victory of his career. The lead over Norris was over 33 seconds. Overall, the team from Milton Keynes has now won twelve Grands Prix in a row across the seasons. McLaren had 11 consecutive wins in 1988 thanks to Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.
In the world championship, Verstappen is now 110 points ahead of the Mexican Perez. The 25-year-old could already have mathematically fixed his third world title at the beginning of October or even at the end of September.
