Germany’s women’s national team has impressively underpinned its position as co-favourites with the highest victory to date at the 2023 World Cup. DFB captain Alex Popp scored two goals to make it 6-0 (2-0) over Morocco in front of 27,256 eyewitnesses in Melbourne. “We don’t take off, it was the first win – not anymore,” said head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg.
The very enthusiastic Brazilians, who defeated Panama 4-0 (2-0) in front of 13,142 spectators in Adelaide, also made a perfect start. The outstanding player wasn’t Marta (she was only substituted on in the 75th minute), but Ary Borges: the 23-year-old midfielder, who works for Racing Louisville in the USA, made three marks on her World Cup debut.
A preliminary decision with a view to the round of 16 can already be made in Group A on Tuesday. At 7.30 a.m. (ORF 1) co-hosts New Zealand are aiming for the next win against the Philippines after the surprising 1-0 win against Norway. If that succeeds and then (10 a.m., ORF 1) Switzerland wins against Norway, both successful teams would be certain to be promoted.
