Liane Lippert has won the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes. The 25-year-old from Friedrichshafen defied the sometimes heavy rain and won the sprint final ahead of Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky in the yellow jersey and Silvia Persico from Italy.
Kopecky, who was victorious on the first stage, defended her lead in the overall classification over the 151.7 kilometers between Clermont-Ferrand and Mauriac. Lippert is now 49 seconds behind in second place.
The stage was overshadowed by several falls. While last year’s winner Annemiek van Vleuten from the Netherlands was able to continue the race after a fall, her compatriot Eva van Agt came off the rain-soaked road a few kilometers before the finish line and crashed into a crash barrier. Nothing was initially known about her state of health.
The second edition of the women’s cycling tour started in Clermont-Ferrand on Sunday. The tour leads through the southwest of France over eight stages and ends next Sunday in Pau.
