Gianluigi Donnarumma became Italy’s EM hero, but after his last penalty saved, he did not cheer – for a curious reason.
Italy’s penalty taker Gianluigi Donnarumma has declared his lack of cheers after his decisive save against Bukayo Saka, revealing that he thought Squadra Azzurra had lost the final.
“I didn’t cheer straight away because I didn’t realize it. I was down after Jorginho’s penalty because I thought we’d lost,” said the 22-year-old Gazzetta dello Sport.
Donnarumma: “I didn’t understand anything at all”
Jorginho previously had the decision on his feet, but failed on England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the post. Then Donnarumma parried against Saka and decided the final in favor of the Italians. Still, surprisingly, Donnarumma did not cheer and instead stepped aside, almost motionless.
“I looked at the referee to see if everything was okay. Then I saw my team-mates come up to me and understood nothing at all,” said the future goalkeeper of Paris Saint-Germain, who only moved from Milan to PSG on a free transfer is still a matter of form.
Donnarumma became the first goalkeeper in history to be voted best player of the tournament after the final and the second penalty shoot-out he won for his team (he had already saved a penalty in the European Championship semi-final against Spain).
