Cristiano Ronaldo has once again left the competition behind. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been the top earner on Instagram for the third consecutive year.
Ronaldo, who in July was ranked by Forbes as the world’s highest-paid athlete for the first time since 2017, following his move to Saudi Arabia, now tops the Instagram Rich List 2023, a global indicator of internet influence.
The list, compiled by Instagram scheduling tool Hopper HQ, is based on internal and public data on how much each user can charge for a post on Instagram and YouTube.
According to Hopper HQ, the Portuguese striker earns $3.23 million per post on Instagram, with close to 600 million followers on the social network.
It is not surprising that the closest rival of ronaldo in the list be Lionel Messi. The world champion with Argentina gets almost 2.6 million dollars for each publication.
This places the two soccer giants ahead not only of any other sports star, but also of celebrities such as the singer and actress Selena Gomezreality star and makeup mogul Kylie Jenner and the actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Only two other athletes, Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and Brazilian footballer Neymar, have cracked the top 20.
“I still find it shocking that the annual money earned on the platform increases every year”says Mike Bandar, co-founder of Hopper HQ.
“Ronaldo and Messi don’t just dominate the pitch, but the digital sphere as well, as it’s clear they embody the power of personal branding and the influence it has on us ‘normal’ people.”.
