Jessica Pilz and lead climbing world champion Jakob Schubert confidently reached the final of the top eight at the World Championships in Bern. Pilz was sixth overall, Schubert managed to finish fifth overall after a moderate performance in bouldering with a top performance in the lead climb. Nicolai Uznik, on the other hand, had to give up in 18th place. The women’s final takes place today (7 p.m.), the men’s on Saturday (4 p.m.).
In his special discipline, Schubert, the 2018 Combined World Champion, turned things around and finished the route like the best of the day in both disciplines, the Japanese Sorato Anraku (184.9 points), with a top result and a total of 144.8 points. “It reminded me of the 2021 Olympics, where I said in front of the lead, it’s already over. With my back against the wall,” said Schubert, who climbed from last place to bronze in the final. Another medal would mean the fixed starting place for Paris 2024.
Austria’s speed climbers clearly missed making it into the final of the top 16 at the World Championships in Bern. Kevin Amon ended up 30th in qualifying on Thursday, European Games winner Lukas Knapp was 37th and Tobias Plangger 68th. There was no Austrian at the start.
