The rain of medals for Upper Austria’s track and field athletes continued on the final day of the U20 European Championships in Jerusalem. After silver from Kevin Kamenschak over 1500 meters and bronze from Sophie Kreiner in the women’s heptathlon, Matthias Lasch had his big day: The 18-year-old from Scharnstein won the silver medal with 8052 points behind the German Amadeus Gräber (8209).
Lasch, athlete of the TGW Zehnkampf Union, really got going on the second day of the competition when his favorite disciplines were on the program. After 110 meters hurdles, he threw the discus in fourth place (45.32 m), came second in the pole vault at 4.90 meters and won the javelin throw with 62.25 meters. He then completed the final 1,500 meters in 4:34.60 minutes, a new personal best.
Immediately afterwards, Kamenschach (ATSV Linz LA) took bronze over the 5000 meters in 14:15.02 minutes. The highly talented native of Linz was only beaten by Niels Laros (Ned) and Jonathan Grahn (Swe) in the finish. Before that, Kamenschak had even considered giving up the start after the 1,500 meters. His ÖLV teammates Timo Hinterndorfer and Emil Bezecny took eighth and ninth place.
