ÖFB team player Sasa Kalajdzic stormed 46 minutes last season for Wolverhampton in the English Premier League – he suffered a cruciate ligament rupture on his debut and spent the rest of the season working on his comeback. The new season kicks off this weekend and the 26-year-old is attacking again.
Kalajdzic completed a few friendlies, including the 0-0 draw against newly promoted Luton. “I’m happy that everything went well. At the moment it’s just the joy and relief to be back,” said the center forward. It is questionable whether he will be able to play against Manchester United at the start on Monday. The decision is made by a new coach, Gary O’Neil: The 40-year-old Englishman and ex-Bournemouth coach was only presented on Wednesday as Julen Lopetegui’s successor. The separation from the Spaniard had been announced the day before after only nine months together.
Manchester City, who open the season at Burnley, are again favorites for the title. For the fourth championship title in a row, coach Pep Guardiola received his dream central defender Josko Gvardiol, who was brought from Leipzig for 90 million euros, and Mateo Kovacic, who was born in Linz, from Chelsea. Captain Ilkay Gündogan left and joined FC Barcelona, Riyad Mahrez moved to Al-Ahli, the club of ex-Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle.
Arsenal makes a new attempt
Guardiola’s former apprentice Mikel Arteta spent much of last season on a master’s course with Arsenal. Even before the Premier League kick-off, there were two wins against Manchester City: Declan Rice opted for the Londoners and came from West Ham for 120 million euros, in the Community Shield Arsenal won the first title after a penalty shoot-out. “It’s a statement for us. It’s a sign that we can beat City in an important game when it counts,” said goalkeeper Aaron Ramsey.
Liverpool in transition
Manchester United also wants to be in the title race with ex-Sturm attacker Rasmus Höjlund. The Danish team striker got the third of the previous season from Atalanta Bergamo for 70 million euros. Liverpool is in a state of upheaval: veterans like Jordan Henderson (Al-Ettifaq), Fabinho (Ittihad Club) and James Milner (Brighton & Hove) have been sold, ex-Salzburger Dominik Szoboszlai and Argentinian world champion Alexis Mac Allister should bring fresh air to the team brought by coach Jürgen Klopp.
