Coach Ricardo Gareca, recently at Vélez Sarsfield and currently without a club, said today that Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani “is a player made for Boca.”
“Cavani is a player made for Boca,” said “Tigre” Gareca, 65, in statements he made to the Super Miter Deportivo radio program.
The former DT of the Peru team, with whom he played in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, highlighted the brilliant incorporation of the Uruguayan attacker to Boca and predicted a good future for the team led by Jorge Almirón in the Copa Libertadores.
“You have to be afraid of Boca in these instances of the Cup,” said Gareca, alluding to the fact that the “Xeneizes” reached the quarterfinals and will play a qualifying series with Racing Club, first at La Bombonera on August 23, and then in Avellaneda a week later.
Despite the fact that his recent passage through Vélez was not good and he left when he realized that he could not reverse the bad situation of the team in the Professional League, the “Tigre” assured that he was not sorry for having taken over the leadership of the team from the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Liniers.
“I do not regret having returned to Argentine soccer. I only returned because I was Vélez and because of the call of (Christian) Bassedas. We all need revenge when things go wrong and I would like to lead the country again because I was born here,” Gareca acknowledged.
“To save himself from relegation, Vélez has to bring incorporations,” added the “Tiger” regarding the delicate situation of “El Fortín” in the first division.
Gareca finally referred to the rumors that linked him as a possible Boca coach during the first half of the year, when the team was led by Hugo Ibarra, who was fired due to poor results and replaced by Jorge Almirón last April.
“The only official call I had from Boca was that of (Daniel) Angelici to find out about my contractual status. This was before Alfaro’s arrival,” Gareca concluded, in an event that dates back to the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019. when the club was run by another management.
