Werder Bremen does not survive the first round of the cup. Against a third division team, the end comes at the last second. The other favorites are not naked.
Werder Bremen was the first Bundesliga club to be kicked out in the first round of the DFB Cup and thus suffered a severe setback in the still young football season.
Double leadership is not enough
After being outnumbered for 80 minutes and leading twice, Werder lost 2:3 (1:0) in a turbulent game at third division club Viktoria Köln. Donny Bogicevic scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of added time, after which the game was not restarted. Werder is now the sole record holder with eleven first-round defeats as a first division team against a lower-class club.
Dortmund without problems
Meanwhile, the other favorites did not hide themselves. Runner-up Borussia Dortmund had no trouble beating regional league team Schott Mainz 6-1 (3-1), nor did Bayer Leverkusen, who clearly won 8-0 (3-0) at regional league team FC Teutonia Ottensen. VfB Stuttgart easily defeated the fourth division team TSG Balingen 4-0 (3-0). FSV Mainz 05 had to tremble at 1-0 (0-0) at SV Elversberg until the end.
Hertha shoots down Jena
Bundesliga relegated Hertha BSC retained the upper hand after the false start in the 2nd division at regional division FC Carl Zeiss Jena 5-0 (1-0) and celebrated the highest victory in the cup competition for 20 years. Last season, Hertha, as the Bundesliga club at the time, lost in the first round on penalties at second division side Eintracht Braunschweig. Second division FC St. Pauli won 5-0 (1-0) at fifth division Atlas Delmenhorst, and league opponent Holstein Kiel won 2-0 (0-0) at FC Gütersloh from the Regionalliga West. 1. FC Nuremberg won 9-1 (6-0) at FC Oberneuland from the Bremen league and SpVgg Greuther Fürth 1-0 (1-0) at third division Hallescher FC.
Meet ducksch and jug
Bremen took the lead twice through Marvin Duksch (43′) and the top scorer Niclas Füllkrug (77′). But Bremen’s home-grown player David Philipp, who trained with the Hanseatic League from 2014 to 2020, equalized twice (72nd/79th). Bogicevic really made the last second for Cologne’s second round entry, who are leaders after the 1st matchday of the 3rd division.
Sébastien Haller (22nd and 35th minute), Julian Brandt (24th), Marcel Sabitzer (57th), Donyell Malen (79th) and Youssoufa Moukoko (85th) scored for Dortmund in front of 30,312 spectators. Nils Gans (34th) scored the acclaimed consolation goal for the blatant outsider. BVB had to do without the injured new signing Felix Nmecha, and the injured Karim Adeyemi was also absent in Mainz.
The Leverkusen goals were scored by Edmond Tapsoba (16th minute), Victor Boniface (42nd), Florian Wirtz (45th + 1), Amine Adli (59th, penalty kick), Jeremie Frimpong (67th), Adam Hlozek (74th, 90th) and Jonas Hofmann (81st).
