End of a golden era: Lange announced the closure of his Olympic cycle

The Argentinian Sailor James Langetriple medalist in Olympic Gamesannounced today his “farewell to the Olympic circuit” after losing, along with Victoria Travasciobefore the duo made up of matthew majdalani and Eugenia Boscothe selective for the Games of paris 2024 in the Nacra 17 sailing class formalized by the Argentine Yachting Federation (Fay).

“The dream of qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is over. @mateomajdalani and @eugebosco were superior and the Argentines will have a great team that represents us. I sincerely wish them to fulfill their Olympic dream. It is their turn to lead flag”Lange expressed in a text on his Instagram account with the title “The road to Paris came to an end.”

The Lange-Travascio duo is in 17th place, with 104 points, in the World Cup in The Hague, Netherlands, the last tournament of the selective for the Olympic Games formalized by the Argentine Yachting Federation (Fay) and which included the Princess Sofia Trophy, from Spain; the French Olympic week in Hyeres and the Olympic Test Event in Marseille this year, while the Mateo Majdalani-Eugenia Bosco pairing -winner of the silver medal at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games- is sixth with 50.

Majdalani and Bosco obtained eighth place in Spain; the silver medal in Hyeres and they finished sixth in Marseille and lead the selective with 10 points against 29 for the Lange-Travascio duo.

The Lange-Travascio duo finished 13th in the Princess Sofia Trophy, in April; 16th in Hieres and did not play the Event Test.

“I want to be very aware of that happiness that I continue to feel in the water and competing. I intend to be very present in every minute that I have left, to leave that feeling of fullness burned into my memory”he claimed.

“Paris was the dream we had with Vicky, but it didn’t come true and I’m sad about that. But I’m also happy for the road traveled, for the enormous joy that sport has given me and that’s what I want to focus on tomorrow when I say goodbye to my Olympic passion. It will be a see you later and also a thank you to everyone who accompanied me on this beautiful journey that will continue with new challenges. Good winds!!”, he concluded.

Lange, 61, participated in seven Olympic Games: Seoul 1988 (Soling Class), Atlanta 1996 (Laser), Sydney 2000 (Tornado), Athens 2004 (Tornado), Beijing 2008 (Tornado); Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020 (Nacra 17).

The Argentine sailor obtained the bronze medals in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 together with the Correntino Carlos Espinola in the Tornado class; and then, in partnership with Rosario Cecilia Carranza Saroli – winner of the gold medal at the Guadalajara 2011 Pan American Games in the Laser Radial class – the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro 2016, the first gold Olympic medal in the history of Argentine sailing.

In September 2015, Lange, father of Yago and Klaus -seventh in the 49er Class at Rio 2016-, underwent surgery to remove a lung tumor.

Lange began training for Paris 2024 in November 2021 together with Travascio, 33, a double Pan-American medalist in the 49er FX class, after forming a duo with Carranza Saroli from 2014 to 2021.

Travascio, along with Sol Branz, won the gold medal at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and the bronze medal at Lima 2019. They also finished 13th. in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and fifth in Tokyo.

In The Hague, nine places are awarded to countries in Nacra 17; ten in 49er FX; seven in Ilca, eight in 470 and eight in Kite.
