MEXICO CITY, Aug 18 (Reuters) – Guadalajara, the most popular club in Mexican soccer, established itself on Friday as the undefeated leader of the Apertura tournament after drawing 1-1 as a visitor to Bravos de Ciudad Juárez in the resumption of the competition.
The local tournament was interrupted for a month due to the Leagues Cup, a competition between Mexican and MLS clubs in the United States, and which will have its final between Inter Miami and Nashville on Saturday.
The match also marked the return of referee Fernando Hernández after serving a 12-game suspension for assaulting a player.
With the tie in the fourth day, the “Chivas” of Guadalajara reached 10 points at the top of the general table after three wins and a draw.
In the game played at the Estadio Olímpico Benito Juárez, Alexis Vega put Guadalajara ahead in the 21st minute when he scored without a mark after goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera parried a shot from Roberto Alvarado.
The home team came close to equalizing after 52 minutes with a shot from Sebastián Saucedo, but the ball crashed off the crossbar.
Near the end, Bravos de Ciudad Juárez tied the game by way of a penalty shot by Colombian Avilés Hurtado at minute 84.
In the other matches on Friday, León beat Mazatlán 2-1 with goals from Ecuadorian Ángel Mena and Uruguayan Federico Viñas, while Ake Loba from Ivory Coast scored for the defeated team.
Atlético de San Luis beat Puebla 2-1 as a visitor with goals from Argentine Mateo Klimowicz and Brazilian Vitor Ferreira “Vitinho”. Guillermo Martínez discounted for Puebla.
Meanwhile, Pumas UNAM and Toluca drew 1-1 with goals from César Huerta and Juan Pablo Domínguez, respectively.
The day will be completed on Sunday with the matches Cruz Azul-Santos Laguna, Querétaro-Pachuca, Atlas-América and Necaxa-Tigres UANL.
The match between Monterrey and Tijuana will be rescheduled because the “Rayados” of Monterrey will play the game for third place in the Leagues Cup against Philadelphia Union on Saturday. (Reporting by Carlos Calvo Pacheco)
