1st matchday: Heidenheim loses in Bundesliga premiere in Wolfsburg

The premiere of 1. FC Heidenheim in the Bundesliga fails. In Wolfsburg, the promoted team conceded their first goals early on.

1. FC Heidenheim started its first season in the Bundesliga with a defeat. At VfL Wolfsburg, the inferior promoted team conceded a 0: 2 (0: 2).

In front of around 1,000 fans who had traveled with him among the 22,620 spectators in the Wolfsburg Arena, Jonas Wind (6th minute/28th) scored twice in the hosts’ deserved victory.

The Heidenheim team coached by Frank Schmidt, who has been coaching the Südwest Club for almost 16 years, showed a hard-working performance. But the 57th club in league history seemed overwhelmed defensively on its debut and played offensively ineffective.

“We don’t really feel nervous at all, but rather anticipation,” Schmidt told Sky before the game. In September he is expected to replace ex-Freiburger Volker Finke as the coach with the longest tenure at a club in German professional football.

Jonas wind hits twice

Schmidt had announced that he “ideally wanted to surprise right away”. However, wind spoiled this thoroughly. After a mistake by goalkeeper Kevin Müller, the strong Dane pushed in effortlessly. And even with the second hit, the attacker felt too little resistance. Heidenheim’s central defender and captain Patrick Mainka gave him too much space for both goals.

Heidenheim started the competitive season last weekend with an 8-0 win over Rostocker FC in the DFB Cup. Schmidt only changed his starting eleven in one position: Florian Pick came in for the offensive driver Jan-Niklas Beste, who was surprisingly not in the squad. According to Schmidt, the 24-year-old stayed at home with his heavily pregnant wife.

VfL coach Niko Kovac was missing attacker Lukas Nmecha, who injured his knee, in comparison to the 6-0 win in the cup at Oberliga side TuS Makkabi Berlin. The Croatian newcomer Lovro Majer started among others with the wolves. In addition, the newcomers Cedric Zesiger started in central defence, the Czech Vaclav Cerny on right wing and the Danish full-back Joakim Maehle.

Contract extension with Tim Kleindienst

Although Schmidt saw a hard performance from his team, the league newcomer was unsorted, sluggish and prone to counterattacks in defensive work. Goalkeeper Müller made two strong saves (39’/45’+4′). To the chagrin of the guests, defender Marnon Busch, who had been strong until then, had to leave the field (31′).

Shortly before the premiere, the club announced the extension with striker Tim Kleindienst, who prematurely extended his contract, which ran until 2025, by two more years. However, the 27-year-old remained inconspicuous and did not create the most dangerous chance for the guests. With promising opportunities, Lennard Maloney (52nd) and substitute Kevin Sessa (74th) missed the premiere goal.
