The Upper Austrian threw his work equipment to 65.61 m in muggy conditions in Saturday’s evening pre-fight. No athlete managed the final standard of 66.50, the top twelve climbed up. Weißhaidinger, a three-time bronze medalist at major events, had the fifth-best performance overall.
Only the Slovenian world champion Kristjan Ceh was better in group B with 65.95, followed by Andrius Gudzius (LTU/65.50) behind the ÖLV record holder. In Group A, Olympic champions Daniel Ståhl (SWE/66.25), Mykolas Alekna (LTU/66.04) and Traves Smikle (JAM/65.71) presented.
Weißhaidinger delivered a consistently good series, he started in the newly built athletics stadium on the Danube with 64.34 and was therefore more than just speculating with the final on Monday. This was followed by 65.61 and 64.20. “You can be happy about that. We started well, that gave you security. I’m happy that I’m in the final for the fourth time in five world championships, I’m proud of it,” said the Innviertler.
Everything went almost as planned. “It wasn’t perfect today. If I can do a little bit more, which I have to do for sure, then I would be completely satisfied.” The favorites all got through. “These are the candidates we were expecting. The cards are being reshuffled.”
