Lothar Matthäus leaves open whether Thomas Tuchel suits the Munich team as a coach. There is one thing the DFB record national player likes about the Bayern coach.
Lothar Matthäus (62) praised Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel’s critical approach to his team.
Especially with regard to Tuchel’s ruthless words after losing the Supercup against RB Leipzig (0: 3), the DFB record national player said that he had recently missed the culture of debate in the German soccer record champions. Matthäus also emphasized “this in-wad-packing of the players, which is perhaps no longer the case now” at a media interview with the betting provider Interwetten. “In recent years, one or the other player may have been protected too much, they should be held more accountable.”
Tuchel had described the defeat against Leipzig as “terrifying” a week before the successful start of the Bundesliga. “I don’t have a solution now, I’m shocked and extremely disappointed.”
Matthew welcomed the criticism. “I think that’s the right way. We used to be tackled a little harder. You didn’t even stand in the shower and Uli Hoeneß insulted you in front of the camera,” said the former Bundesliga star with amusement about his time as a player at FC Bayern.
Matthäus left it open whether Tuchel would suit Munich as a coach. “It remains to be seen, I wouldn’t say yes or sign it or check it,” he said. “Tuchel has taken a path, if the path is as successful as it was on Friday, then he has found the right path.” Bayern started the new Bundesliga season 4-0 in Bremen.
Tuchel took over at Bayern at the end of March as the successor to Julian Nagelsmann, who was released, and repeatedly showed mixed performances with the team. The former coach of Chelsea FC and Paris Saint-Germain only secured the championship with Munich on the last day of last season in a long-distance duel with Borussia Dortmund.
