The Maracanã stadium will be closed after the next two scheduled matches to allow the pitch to recover after heavy rains, the venue’s administration said on Tuesday.
The emblematic stadium in Rio de Janeiro is the most used in the country, with 55 games played throughout the season. The weekend hosted two meetings with an interval of less than 15 hours.
“Considering that the damage caused cannot be recovered without a stoppage, after (Saturday) we will (stop) the activities of the stadium to allow the full recovery of the field”the venue administration said in a statement.
fluminense will face olympia on Thursday in the Libertadores quarterfinals, while Flamengo will face Inter on Saturday at the Brasileirao, after which the stadium will remain closed until “the necessary verifications and evaluations” are carried out.
