Since Wednesday, Victoria Hudson has finally arrived at the top of the world: At the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, the Lower Austrian carried the javelin with her very first throw to 62.96 meters and thus over the fix qualification mark (61.50) for Friday following finals of the top twelve (from 8.20 p.m. live on ORF Sport Plus).
The 27-year-old didn’t go into the competition with the best feeling: the third of her warm-up throws went completely wrong. “I then said to myself, it doesn’t matter, I have to tick that off now. And then the first of the competition was really good,” says the daughter of a Briton and an Austrian.
Only she was the one screaming
When the range indicator showed 62.96, she was surprised. “The throw didn’t feel that far at all. But great.” After entering her first final in world title fights, Hudson spoke of the “most important throw” of her life.
After the deprivations recently, there was also a good deal of relief to have called up the performance to the point.
“I’m glad that I’m standing here now and not crying and not being happy. Now I was the one who screamed in front of the square. And not the others who then unsettle you a bit with it.” Because, according to Hudson, someone is always screaming. In the final she is aiming for a top eight place, before that she spent time with her family, resting and crocheting.
