After fifth place over 20 kilometers, walker Christopher Linke wants to be at the front over the long distance as well. The expected heat could play a role.
Seven decisions will be made at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest this Thursday. The best chance of a good German placement is first thing in the morning.
Walk, men, 35 kilometers (7:00 a.m.)
Christopher Linke started the World Championships with the German record over 20 kilometers and fifth place. He is second at the European Championships over the longer distance. Carl Dohmann and Karl Junghannß complete the German trio. 20 km world champion Àlvaro Martín from Spain is also at the start.
Walk, women, 35 kilometers (7:00 a.m.)
As with the men, it should also be important for the women who can cope best with the heat and the high humidity. Bianca Maria Dittrich is the only German starter, but not a contender for a medal. Maria Pérez of Spain competes again after winning gold over 20km.
Long jump, men (7:30 p.m.)
Jamaica’s Wayne Pinnock achieved the longest set in qualifying with a world best of 8.54 meters. The defending champion is China’s Wang Jianan, who managed 8.34 meters. Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou from Greece qualified with 8.25 meters. German long jumpers are not at the start in Budapest.
Hammer throw, women (8:26 p.m.)
Defending champion May Brooke Andersen from the USA surprisingly dropped out in the qualification. She was only the third woman to surpass the 80-meter mark this season. The three-time Olympic champion, four-time world champion and world record holder Anita Wlodarczyk from Poland also dropped out. She was missing last year injured after chasing a car thief. Hanna Skydan of Azerbaijan was the best in Wednesday’s qualification.
100 meter hurdles, women (9:22 p.m.)
Defending champion Tobi Amusan was temporarily suspended before the World Cup for violating the obligation to register, but is allowed to compete in Budapest. The Nigerian could be dethroned, among others, by the American Kendra Harrison, who has been stronger up to now.
400 meters, men (9:35 p.m.)
Defending champion Michael Norman is injured, Olympic champion Steven Gardiner injured his thigh in the semifinals and did not finish. The Rio Olympic champion and two-time world champion Wayde van Niekerk will be in the final. After tearing his cruciate ligament, the South African is once again among the best in the world.
400 meter hurdles, women (9:50 p.m.)
Last year’s winner and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone from the United States will not start at the World Cup. This should clear the way for European champion Femke Bol from the Netherlands. In the final of the 4x400m mixed relay, Bol fell while sprinting for gold. For the German champion Carolina Krafzik it was over in the semifinals.
