Tennis Olympic champion Alexander Zverev was not very lucky in the draw for the US Open, which begins next Monday. The 26-year-old from Hamburg meets Australian Aleksandar Vukic, number 51 in the world, in the first round of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year.
Should Zverev overcome the opening hurdle in New York, he could meet Davis Cup colleague Daniel Altmaier in the second round, but he must first prevail against Frenchman Constant Lestienne. By far the hardest draw from a German point of view was Dominik Koepfer, who faced number one seeded Carlos Alcaraz from Spain in the first lap. Yannick Hanfmann also caught a very thankless lot with the world number six Jannik Sinner from Italy.
In the women’s category, 36-year-old Tatjana Maria, Germany’s number one, will initially compete against Croatia’s Petra Martic. Tamara Korpatsch has to deal with the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu, and Anna-Lena Friedsam is the outsider in the duel against Wimbledon semi-finalist Jelina Switolina from Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Laura Siegemund reached the third round of qualification with a 6:2, 7:6 (7:4) against the Swiss Simona Waltert. The 35-year-old is only one win away from reaching the main draw. Last year’s round of 16, Jule Niemeier, on the other hand, failed in the first qualifying round.
