Formula 1: Verstappen on maximum course: hat trick with a record in sight

Max Verstappen is missing one more win. Then he did what Sebastian Vettel once did – also in the Red Bull – at his Formula 1 wedding.

Max Verstappen no longer knew exactly when the message from Sebastian Vettel came. “I think it was after the fifth win in a row or something,” reported the two-time Formula 1 world champion after his recent drive to pole at the Dutch Grand Prix, his home race.

The current successful Red Bull driver could well remember the words of the former Red Bull start. “Well done” and he should continue like this: “Then you can do it.”

Verstappen can complete what Vettel did in 2013 this Sunday (3 p.m. / Sky): nine wins in a row. Verstappen won in Miami, Monaco, Spain, Canada and Austria, Great Britain, Hungary and Belgium. The world champion of 2021 and 2022 and designated champion of 2023 finished first in ten of the previous twelve Grand Prix.

Nerve-wracking qualification

In Zandvoort he wants to continue the series and set the signs himself on an optimal course. In a nerve-wracking qualification with two interruptions in the final knockout round, Verstappen once again duped all his rivals on Saturday. On the decisive lap, he drove over half a second faster than Lando Norris in second place in the McLaren. Everyone can make mistakes, including Verstappen, said the Briton, who is a good friend of the Dutchman: “Unfortunately, he doesn’t make any.”

Nine wins in a row are impressive, Verstappen himself stated, looking back at Vettel’s message at the time. “I didn’t think I’d make eight.”

The series began on May 7th. On August 27th it can reach its preliminary peak. But it’s not something that he always has in mind, emphasized Verstappen, who is clearly heading towards his next title triumph with a 125-point lead in the world championship standings over his Mexican Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez. He is not in the sport to break records. “I’m only here to win now,” said Verstappen.
