Austria’s tennis star Dominic Thiem spoke for the first time on Friday after his defeat in the second round of the US Open. “It’s never nice to end a match like this,” he wrote in an Instagram post two days after the out and two days before his 30th birthday. “But this time it hurts even more because the tournament means so much to me.”
Thiem had given up after losing the first set against the American Ben Shelton in the tie-break and a game in the second round due to stomach cramps. “At the beginning of the week I will have some medical tests in Austria, then I will know more.” In any case, he takes it as a positive to be able to play at a high level again. “It gives me a lot of self-confidence for the upcoming tournaments.”
Shelton meanwhile advanced to the round of 16 with a four-set win against the Russian Aslan Karazew on Friday and is now playing against his compatriot Tommy Paul (No. 14) for a place in the quarterfinals.
