Vilda was considered an ally of Rubiales, who kissed player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth at the World Cup victory celebration. Despite massive criticism, Rubiales has so far refused to give up his post. However, he was suspended by FIFA for 90 days.

The RFEF also addressed the public with a request for an apology. “We must offer our sincere apologies and make a firm and binding commitment that such events must never be repeated,” RFEF interim president Pedro Rocha said in a letter. In it, Rocha speaks of “completely unacceptable behavior on the part of the highest representative” (the association).

“Mr Rubiales’ behavior does not represent the values defended by the Spanish FA, nor the values of Spanish society as a whole,” Rocha’s letter said. “The damage done to Spanish football, Spanish sport, Spanish society and all the values of football and sport has been enormous.”
