The now suspended football association president Luis Rubiales is threatened with further trouble in the kissing scandal in Spain. The public prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation.
As announced, the public prosecutor’s office has requested the initiation of an investigation into the Spanish kissing scandal involving the now suspended football association president Luis Rubiales.
The criminal complaint against Rubiales was filed with the State Court in Madrid, the Europa Press news agency and other Spanish media reported, citing the public prosecutor’s office. A justice spokesman confirmed this information in response to a dpa request.
Now an examining judge at the “Audiencia Nacional” in Madrid must decide whether the criminal complaint will be accepted and whether investigations will be initiated that could lead to a trial. According to experts’ estimates, the 46-year-old former professional Rubiales could be sentenced to between one and four years in prison if he were actually put in the dock and found guilty at trial.
FIFA has already suspended Rubiales for 90 days
Rubiales kissed player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth at the award ceremony after Spain won the World Cup final in Sydney on August 20th. This was done by mutual consent, he asserts. But Hermoso said she felt “like the victim of an impulsive, sexist and inappropriate act to which I did not consent.” The 33-year-old filed a complaint. This in turn made it possible for the public prosecutor to file a criminal complaint for sexual harassment and coercion.
World governing body FIFA has already suspended Rubiales for 90 days and initiated disciplinary proceedings. However, Rubiales continues to refuse to resign as head of the association, although this was also demanded by the regional associations of the RFEF, among others. However, the national association rejected the possibility of a vote of no confidence against the suspended president.
