Some grass has only just grown about the story of Novak Djokovic’s episodic expulsion from Australia at the beginning of 2022, and the tennis star is helping to breathe new life into the Covid vaccination discussion that began at the time.
“I was never an anti-vaccination campaigner,” the Serb explained in a talk show on ESPN hosted by tennis legend John McEnroe. The 36-year-old added that he was more of a supporter of freedom of choice.
“I never had the feeling that many people really had a choice,” says Djokovic, who recently won the US Open. A touch of irony: Of all people, vaccine manufacturer Moderna honored the superstar with the “Shot of the Day” award at the Grand Slam tournament in New York.
That was a minor matter for Djokovic, as he was not against vaccinations per se. He just wanted to play tennis. When he was refused entry to Australia, he felt like a “villain in the world”. As a reminder: Djokovic wanted to enter the country as a recently infected person. There were doubts about this status, as he had demonstrably attended public appointments among many people immediately after his alleged infection.
