1. School sports in prison
Nagelsmann grew up in Landsberg am Lech. He knows the local correctional facility well: as a child he played school sports there. Later, a famous person from FC Bayern is imprisoned in the prison – Uli Hoeneß, who was convicted of tax evasion.
2. A haven of peace in nature
The mountains give Nagelsmann “a humble feeling: this sheer size, this incredible calm”, he says. As a child, he often went to Ochsenälpeleskopf in the Ammergau Alps, where his family had a hut: he spent a lot of time there with his father. He died when Nagelsmann was 20. “The most terrible experience of my life.”
3. Internship with Tuchel
Nagelsmann’s last active coach was Thomas Tuchel: He coached him in the FC Augsburg second team in 2008. When Nagelsmann stopped playing football after a meniscus injury, he did a kind of trial internship with Tuchel. The two later meet in the Champions League – like here in 2020 as coaches of Paris Saint-Germain (Tuchel) and RB Leipzig (Nagelsmann).
4. Bavarian customs
As a true Bavarian, he says to his players “Greetings” and “Pfiat di”. He also loves white sausage “unbroken”said Nagelsmann. In Frankfurt, where he now works for the DFB, he will have to get used to the “Grie Soß” – green sauce, Frankfurt’s national dish.
5. No scruples
Nagelsmann is a fan of American TV series. His favorites: “Homeland” and “House of Cards”where unscrupulous politician Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey) moves into the White House with his equally unscrupulous wife Claire (Robin Wright).
6. Big screamer
Nagelsmann is working with a speech therapist because of a thickening of the edges of the vocal cords. It also helps him to be able to scream louder. Here he is roaring in an exemplary manner during a game between FC Bayern Munich and 1. FC Köln.
7. Cold hobby
Football is his great passion. A close second is ice hockey. In his youth he played for EV Landsberg for three years. During his active football career he then worked for SV Apfeldorf. “That was cool”Nagelsmann remembers: “Football games during the week and then an ice hockey game on the weekend.”
8. Off to the field
Like many players, Nagelsmann likes fast cars. As a brand ambassador for Jaguar, he drives a Jaguar F-Type convertible. But Nagelsmann can also do something different: he owns a tractor with which he likes to rumble across Bavarian meadows for a change.
9. Young face
His player pass from 2008 shows him as a 20-year-old. Nagelsmann hardly looks much older today – but he has taken off his silver earrings.
10. Early relationship
They have known each other since school: Nagelsmann met Verena in 2007 and the two married in 2018. He says she doesn’t have it easy with him: “I’ve woken my wife up several times by shouting a player’s name loudly in her sleep.” Manuel! Jamal! Nagelsmann separated from her last year and came with her “Picture”-Reporter Lena Wurzenberger.
