As has been clear for weeks, LASK footballer of the century Helmut Köglberger was honored with his own place post mortem.
Before the Europa League hit against Liverpool, the forecourt of the stadium on the Gugl received its sign, making it officially inaugurated.
“It is a reference to one of the greatest football players our city has ever had. It is not without reason that Helmut Köglberger was named LASK’s footballer of the century and therefore the naming of the pitch is a tribute to a great son of our city,” said Mayor Klaus Luger in a press release quoted.
Köglberger, who died almost five years ago to the day, was also moving with his social commitment. “Helmut Köglberger is still incredibly present as a personality and a likeable advertising medium for football. If you saw him play, like I did back then, then you will remember it,” said State Governor Thomas Stelzer.
“His life was not only characterized by sporting successes, but also by his social commitment. A thank you to Mayor Klaus Luger and the city senate, our application was answered positively unbureaucratically and quickly,” said LASK President Siegmund Gruber.
Accordingly, the LASK office will have a new address – without having to move. In the future it will be located at “Helmut-Köglberger-Platz 1”.
