In his first appearance since the US Open, things are not going well for Alexander Zverev. The Olympic champion only dominated at the end of the round of 16 at the tournament in Chengdu.
Alexander Zverev struggled to reach the quarterfinals at the ATP tournament in Chengdu, China. In his first appearance since the quarter-final exit at the US Open, the Olympic tennis champion prevailed 7:6 (7:5), 4:6, 6:1 against Russian outsider Pavel Kotow.
Zverev dominated the round of 16 duel with the world number 106. After two tough sets only in the third round, managed three breaks in a row and was happy about the hard-fought success after 2:25 hours. “The best players in the world find a way to win when they’re not playing great. And I was far from playing great. The important thing is winning,” he said. The top seed from Hamburg had a bye in the first round and will now face the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic. Zverev is the only German tennis professional at the hard court tournament.
Zverev suffered a muscle injury in his left thigh in the defeat against Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in New York a good two weeks ago and canceled his appearance for the German Davis Cup team in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The former world number two wants to reach the ATP Finals this year and has to finish at least eighth in the annual rankings.
