Too bad for the Bundesliga: Fürth sets a sad record

It was clear that it would not be easy after the ascent, but so? SpVgg Greuther Fürth has set a sad Bundesliga record with ten defeats in a row. The only certainty is now: Fürth can plan for the 2nd division.

The game of SpVgg Greuther Fürth in Mönchengladbach was an oath of revelation. The promoted team went down 4-0 in Borussia-Park. It was a bit like a men’s team was playing against an overwhelmed youth team. The Gladbachers combined easily through the ranks of the leaders, or the guests made blatant mistakes like goalkeeper Marius Funk, who played a return directly into Florian Neuhaus’ foot. The midfielder gratefully accepted the gift and shot the ball straight into the goal. At the break it was already 3-0, in the second half the joyful Gladbachers took it easy, Fürth posed no threat. The fourth goal came from Paul Seguin, who threw the ball away in midfield.

Coach Stefan Leitl’s conclusion after the game was as follows: “That was a deserved defeat. We weren’t able to be an equal opponent from the first minute.”

A real horror record

Fürth has so far had a true horror record. The loss to Gladbach was the eleventh in the twelfth game. And it was the tenth in a row. This means that the people of Fürth are in an exclusive circle: 1. FC Nürnberg (1983/84), Arminia Bielefeld (1999/00) and Tasmania Berlin (1965/66) also put down such bankruptcy series. All three ended up relegated from the Bundesliga.

The one point that Fürth has got so far comes from the draw against Arminia Bielefeld on matchday two. Statistically speaking, the club is actually the worst Bundesliga team of all time at this point in the season. When asked about the negative series, attacker Jamie Leweling expressed it very directly on the Sky microphone: “How are you supposed to be? Of course, really shit.”

Without exaggerating one can say: The situation is already hopeless for the newcomer at this early point in the season, the planning for the 2nd division can begin. Presumably, for the team and the whole club, it’s just a matter of saying goodbye to the league with decency and getting one or two threesomes.

The best players left the club before the season

Before the season started, those in charge such as sporting director Rachid Azzouzi knew that it would not be easy. Fürth suffered a sporty bloodletting like so many newcomers or small clubs before, when suddenly there is success. With Anton Stach, David Raum, Sebastian Ernst and Paul Jaeckel, four of the best players left the club for larger clubs. The signings did not ignite. There was bad luck with injuries and corona-related failures, but in the end all that remains is the realization that the squad is not suitable for the Bundesliga.

Given the league’s smallest budget, that’s not surprising. Even the climb was a small miracle in view of the lack of money. So the situation is hopeless.
