Harry Kane also cuts a good figure in lederhosen: After his three goals in the German Bundesliga in the 7-0 win against Bochum, there was a celebration at Oktoberfest. “I’m proud, it’s a special day. My first hat-trick for FC Bayern and in front of our fans too – we have to keep it up.”

A year ago, the Munich team around the then coach and new national coach Julian Nagelsmann as well as the former bosses Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic toasted each other in a bad mood in the Käfer Wiesn-Schänke after a 0-1 defeat in Augsburg. Now sports director Christoph Freund spoke of a “perfect Oktoberfest weekend”. A visit to the beer tent is “important for the camaraderie, for the team structure.”

“I want to soak up as much of the festival as I can,” Kane said. “It has a great tradition.” When trying on the costume, the English team captain was particularly surprised by the Haferl shoes. “The shoes are really tight, I’ve never worn anything like that before. I still have to get used to them.”

Nevertheless, “very relaxed,” Kane reached for a pint of beer in the celebrity tent at lunchtime yesterday. Coach Thomas Tuchel, on the other hand, has little use for beer. “They’ll put something in my beer mug,” joked the 50-year-old ascetic. In a TV interview on Saturday he explained his personal Oktoberfest motto: “The lederhosen are ready, we strap them on – and then close our eyes and go through.”

Record set

A year after the failed experiment without a well-known number nine in the center of attack, FC Bayern again has a great striker, a real successor to former world footballer Robert Lewandowski. “He scores, he has assists and plays without frills. He shows personality – and he also takes responsibility. Job done,” said Tuchel about Kane.

England’s team captain already has seven goals to his name after five games. The German Bundesliga’s record purchase improved a club record: after their first five games, Gerd Müller, Miroslav Klose and Mario Mandzukic were the best with five goals.

After the final whistle against Bochum, Kane was celebrated by the fans on the lap of honor with the match ball as a souvenir. They celebrated further goals by Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Matthijs de Ligt, Leroy Sane and Mathys Tel. The beer tent hits “Sweet Caroline” and “Cordula Grün” echoed through the stadium to celebrate the day. “We always had the momentum and were excited to play in all positions. We really played a great game,” said substitute Thomas Müller. ÖFB legionnaire Konrad Laimer played through in central midfield. But Kane didn’t enjoy the Oktoberfest too much: tomorrow he wants to be in good shape again in the DFB Cup against third division team Münster.
